Len, I will ask Lyuben and find out if he knows more detais. Ignat is a wonderful guy. He's one of my father's favorite players from the old generation.
At this time we don't know when Ignat will be available, but as soon at we have a better idea we will post that on the web-site. What would your preferences be?
I am glad to hear Ignat is a wonderful guy. He is certainly a wonderful player. I am familiar with his playing with Bai Georgi and his accompaniment always seems just perfect - always enough, never too much.
My preference? Cannot say yet. Not sure how much of this Lisa and I will manage. She's currently thinking of leaving me there for classes while she goes to Skopje to visit colleagues.
Len, I spoke with my dad and he said that Ignat can be available any days that the students would request him to show up. He lives in Plovdiv, so transportation is not an issue.
I'm Larry Weiner, the Registrar for the Seminar, and currently I'm in Plovdiv working on some of the technical details for the Seminar. At this time there are actually more registrations from west coast (USA) folks than anywhere else. But one should remember that we are still very, very early in the registration process (registration only opened on March 24th)and the demographic mix could easily change as time goes by. However, we have received registrations and inquiries from many places around North America,Belgium, Holland, Japan and other places.
raicho, to answer your last 2 questions.. When you get a room I don't think there is such a thing as "non-smoking" vs "smoking". You may choose to share a room with people who don't smoke to ensure a smoke-free environment. Pubs, cafes, and other public places are starting to come up with "non-smoking" areas but in general it's safer to assume that you will be exposed to cigarette smoke than not.
As to the next question, yes, I believe you can videotape the teachers. Of course if some of them mind, they will probably say so but we have not imposed any restriction like that. It's unlikely that any of the teachers would mind being vedoetaped.
I'm still in Plovdiv working on Seminar plans. I agree with Tzvety on the non-smoking vs smoking rooms, although some of the newer (more expensive)hotels in the vicinity may indeed have non-smoking rooms. Intgerestingly, last December some legislation went into effect in Bulgaria requiring restaurants to have non-smoking areas. My experience here tells me that this new law is NOT really being enforced, but, it does give you some indication of the direction that the legislators in Bulgaria are hoping to move the country.
On the question of videoing, we discussed this yesterday (which is why I handn't responded sooner) and for the dance classes we'd prefer that to take place during each instructors "review" session at the end of the class. I'd assumed that the question refered to the dance classes, is that true?
Larry wrote, "I'd assumed that the question [of videotaping] referred to the dance classes, is that true?"
Yes but I was also thinking of possibly taping in a music class, if I take one.
In the dance classes by the way I was only thinking of taping the teacher. I know I get annoyed sometimes when people tape a line I am dancing in and don't ask for my or any of the dancers' permission.
yes, buses and trains are available at very decent prices. My personal preference would be bus transportation - it's cheap, the buses are very fast and fairly comfortable.
We have signed up for the seminar and are now searching for hotels in the immediate area... I have looked at the ones on your web site already... are the ones listed within walking distance? Will you be posting any more? Advice would be great. Thanks
There are two references to Hotels at our web site, one is under lodging and lists a few specific hotels/hostels, the other is under links. In the lodging section (which we will be updating during the first 2 weeks in June), the specific hotels referenced (Sportna Shreshta, Dafi, and Seven Hills) are all withing a short walking distance of the Music Academy). The other links are to web sites that list a number of hotels and some are within within walking distance and others not.
When talking or emailing them you should inquire about how long a walk they are from the Music Academy in the "old town".
OK, now that there's two days left before registration, I have a question about singing classes.
Will any of the singing classes be a comfortable environment for men to sing in or will the primary focus be on women's style, etc. I haven't taken from any of the teachers listed and I'm not terribly familiar with the regional styles to know the appropriateness of men singing in any of these traditions. Thanks for the info.
hi steve, yours is a very good question and I am not sure what the answer would be. I can certainly ask the staff and find out what their opinion is. In the past, I have been translating for singing classes where there are 3-4 men amids say 10 women so it's not completely impossible to do. I'd say if you're a really low voice then you may have trouble. Otherwise you will be fine.
Thanks Tzvety -- Rick are I are both tenors so singing with the women probably shouldn't be a problem in terms of range. My question also has to do with how amenable the instructors are, if there's a specific focus on women's styling/technique, etc.
We'd appreciate it if you could check with the staff. Thanks again. --Steve
Hi Steve, I spoke with my mother last night and she said that for her singing workshop she knows that focus is not so much on women's singing because Thracian songs are performed by both women and men. For some of the other styles, for example Shop singing, it may be a little bit unusual for men to do it just because it's historiacally done mostly by women but that shouldn't stop you from trying it. There are male Shop singers so that shouldn't discourage you at all. I think you will be just fine in any singing class. There is not going to be a preference for women or a certain vocal quality, or technique in any of the classes. The classes will focus on improving your technique but your ability as a singer will not be a prerequisite.

I'm curious, how many people are signed
up for this now? Are they mostly from
the eastern US?

Is it possible to get a non-smoking room

Will video-taping of teachers

Raicho,
Audio taping will be allowed (and encouraged) in the instrumental classes. Were you thinking about videotaping the instrumental classes as well?
Yes, I was also thinking about videotaping
in a music class. My thought was that it
would help me remember complex fingering.
All videotaping I've mentioned, by the way,
would only be for my own, non-commercial
use.

I have never been to Bulgaria. I don't want to drive there. Is the bus or the train the best transport between towns? Thanks.
